A Forecasting Platform User Made $436K on Wagers Predicting the Ouster of Maduro.
A bettor profited close to $500,000 by predicting the removal of the Venezuelan leader immediately preceding it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of American actions.
Sudden Shift in Predictions
Wagers on Polymarket, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the month's conclusion rose in the period preceding former President Trump declared on Saturday that Maduro had been seized.
A single trader, which joined the platform last month and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $436,000 from a initial bet of over $32,000.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Odds Fluctuate Before News Break
Market statistics shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the midday period of Friday, January 2nd.
However these probabilities had increased to 11% by the end of the day and skyrocketed in the morning of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment just before the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the signs of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other individuals also profited large payouts from similar wagers.
Political Attention Intensifies
Elected officials are starting to take note.
A new rule introduced on Monday would prevent public officials from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.
